it is my belief that metal is an offshoot of rock. however at this time it has managed to seperate itself from it's origins. i believe a better way off looking at this question would be to trace back to the bands that were some of the first to really break away from what was considered to be hard rock.

i look to bands like iron maiden, sabbath, zeppelin as the fore fathers of what many consider metal these days.

whereas their "rock" contemporaries of their era managed to stay in the aor (album oriented rock) area of music. deep purple, blue oyster cult, yes.

please disregard this as the ramblings of a sober mind.
and anyone that thinks electronica started in the eighties is nuts...

pierre schaeffer was noodling around with alot of stuff that most of my peers regard as the defining genesis of electronic music in the 1940's.
but this is about metal and rock so i'll stfu now

Yes that is true, but the question is is Metal a form of Rock, it originated from Rock Music, therefore it is another form of Rock, whether or not it set itself apart from hard Rock and Soft Rock, it is still a form of Rock. Saying Metal isn't is like saying Soft Rock isn't rock because it is different than Hard Rock. They are still forms of Rock.
